Advantages of plasticisation (Weight reduction)

Updated: Nov 18, 2022

What do you think of resin?

Lightweight? Cheap, recycled for the SDGs?

There are many different images, but this time we will introduce its merits from the perspective of weight reduction.

For example, most cars are made up of metal and resin parts, but recently the proportion of resin is increasing. This can be seen as a shift from metal to resin.

The reason for this is that, as the title suggests, there are advantages in terms of weight reduction. Lighter vehicles improve fuel efficiency and are therefore kinder to the environment and your wallet.

How much lighter is resin compared to metal, which weighs about 1/7th of metal?

This means that if all car parts were replaced with resin, the weight could be reduced by hundreds of kilos.

However, in exchange for its lightness, resin is only about 1/8th the strength of metal.

This means that it is eight times more fragile.

If you make car frames and doors out of a resin that is eight times more fragile ... there is a greater chance of death in the event of an accident. This would make them unfeasible as products.

So there is no merit in using resin? Resin has the advantage that it can be shaped more freely than metal.

For example, I want to replace metal with resin! But I want the rigidity to be the same as metal! In this case, you can change the wall thickness of the resin.

With resin, it is easy to change the wall thickness and add ribs for reinforcement.

With metal, this is quite difficult.

The following are examples of resin shapes that can ensure the same rigidity as metal.

In this case, a weight reduction of approximately 50% can be expected compared to metal.
