Glossary: What is a "mold" in injection molding?

Updated: Aug 1, 2023

What is a mold in injection molding?

It refers to the mold used to form plastic products.

Plastic molds have the following main characteristics:

  1. Injection Molds: Injection molds are used in the injection molding process where molten plastic is injected under high pressure into a mold where it cools and forms. Inside the mold, there is a cavity (cavity) according to the shape and dimensions of the product, into which molten plastic is injected. Injection molds are suitable for mass production of plastic products and can achieve consistent quality.

  2. Compression molds: Compression molds are used in the compression molding process, where plastic powder or sheet material is placed in a mold and heated and pressed to solidify its shape. Compression molds are suitable for manufacturing large, thick plate products and products with special shapes. Also, because it is a low-pressure molding process, it is possible to create products with complex shapes and internal structures.

  3. Mold design and manufacturing: Plastic molding mold design and manufacturing is based on product requirements and plastic molding processes. Molds must be durable, so they are made from high-quality metal (usually steel). Mold design includes cavities, runners (plastic supply channels), ejectors (parts where products are ejected), and cooling systems.

To give a familiar analogy, the metal frame used to make taiyaki is called a mold.

Plastic molds have a significant impact on the shape and dimensional accuracy, surface quality and productivity of products. Proper management and maintenance of molds is important and is done to prolong life and ensure product quality and productivity.
