Metal 3D Printing: Relating laser conditions to porous structures

Porous refers to a structure that contains many holes (pores) inside and is breathable. Familiar objects such as sponges and pumice can be said to have a porous structure.

Metal 3D printers can create objects with a porous structure by deliberately adjusting the laser conditions. However, the bottleneck was that the modelling conditions to create a semi-molten state were complex and difficult to control.

Based on our experience and knowledge since its introduction, we have been able to determine the 'laser pitch' and 'laser feed speed' in the laser conditions.

We have found that the 'laser pitch' and 'laser feed rate' in the laser conditions are important for controlling the porous structure.

We have found that a smaller laser pitch and a slower laser feed rate can lead to more uniform porous surface holes.

The finer and more uniform porous structure not only improves the degassing efficiency, but also improves the appearance.

It is therefore widely used in nested parts for mass production moulds.
