How much does the surface roughness of a mold affect mold release resistance?
We installed a pressure sensor inside the mold and made measurements.
Three surface treatments were applied to the mold surface for comparison. The polished finish has the lowest surface roughness, which means it has the least unevenness. If mold release resistance can be reduced by reducing the surface roughness, it is expected that a mold with a polished finish would have the lowest mold release resistance.
As a result of the experiment, the mold release resistance value is the highest for the hand-polished finish and the lowest for the IEPKO treatment. According to the paper, the smaller the surface roughness, the higher the adhesion force between the resin and the mold, indicating that the surface roughness should be neither too large nor too small. In the cutting process as well, the surface roughness changes depending on the size and material of the mold, so the IEPKO treatment, which can build up a stable surface roughness, is the best for mass production.
